A Short History
Dewar Street Green
When the bowling club was originally formed in 1852 its home was a green at the top of Buffies Brae. Although rather small, this green was adequate while membership remained low, but by the 1890's there were 65 members and the green suffered from heavy over-use and in 1893 the Committee decided to obtain land in Dewar Street, which was in course of being developed at that time. They therefore approached Major J. M. Hunt, the owner of the ground to the south of Dewar Street who agreed to rent one acre of the land for a fee of £10 p.a. for 20 years with a further option available thereafter.
The Committee accepted Major Hunt's terms and, after a great deal of consultation and preparation, the new green and clubhouse was formally opened on Saturday 2nd June 1894 by Mr William Inglis, manufacturer and ex baillie of the town, in the presence of a large and fashionable gathering of invited guests and representatives of other clubs. Also included were lawn tennis courts "for the Ladies" on the western side of the Green.
The total cost of the green, tennis courts and clubhouse amounted to approximately £600!
